1. The Engine Fails To Turn Over
Your car engine cannot start without electrical power. If the engine fails to turn over (crank) or it takes too long to do so, there could be a problem with your starter, battery, alternator, and so on. A “click” as you turn the ignition key shows the current flowing in the system is not enough to crank up the engine. Usually, the batter is to blame. However, a “grinding” noise as you start the car could mean the starter or flywheel ring is faulty. Again, there could be a major issue in your car’s electrical system. Have an expert carry out a detailed electrical diagnosis. 2. Frequent Problems with Your Battery Your car battery is designed to last for at most 5 years so don’t rush to replace it when it starts experiencing problems. The problem could lie elsewhere, say the alternator. Where you suspect the battery to be the problem, check for signs of corrosion in the cables and fit them well. If it persists, have a professional check the battery. A properly working battery shows that the problem is certainly elsewhere. 3. Poorly Functioning Lights Whether they are headlights, brake lights or turn signals, lights cannot function properly minus the electrical system. The same goes for the lamps and interior illumination. When you begin to frequently have dimming lights, you could be having trouble with the alternator belt, loose wires or a dying battery. The electrical system could also be extremely corroded. 4. Fuses Keep Blowing Up The work of the fuse box is to prevent short-circuiting and over-voltage. To prevent different systems from drawing too much power and blowing up, fuses break circuits. However, fuses are not supposed to blow up all the time. If you notice that, you probably need a proper electrical diagnosis to determine the problem. 5. The Smell of Burning Electrical Insulation or Plastic The smell of burning insulation could indicate any of the problems above or more. Most likely, there is a short circuit or serious malfunction of the electrical wiring system. It is likely to occur at the same time as issues such as starting the car, blown fuses or dimmed lights.
