Having trouble starting your car?
To start an internal combustion engine, the starter motor plays a very key role. It turns over the engine enabling it to suck in air and fuel, which is then ignited by a spark. The starter motor works together with the battery, starter, and starter motor solenoid. The action of turning the ignition switch produces an electric charge which is created by the alternator and stored with the help of the battery. The charge is then transmitted to the starter motor solenoid before being sent on to the starter motor. At this point, the starter motor starts the engine by cranking it up. Once the engine starts the combustion process, the starter disengages and becomes inactive. So, why does a Starter Motor Need Replacing? Even though it is designed to work for a long time, a starter motor may fail due to wear and tear. However, that does not happen outright but becomes apparent once you start noticing certain signs. |

The following are the common reasons for starter motor replacements:
1. Grinding Noise The connection between the starter and the flywheel is a set of gears. When these gears get worn out, you are likely to hear a grinding noise. If the starter motor has issues in its interior, it may also produce these grinding noises. Whichever the case, the only solution is a replacement of the part or parts that are worn out. If you delay, the grinding will damage the flywheel which will cost you a lot of money to replace. 2. Freewheeling After cranking the engine it should typically come to life. If that does not happen, but instead you hear a whining noise, then the engine has gone into freewheeling. The problem is very simple. In effect, the starter motor is not turning the flywheel into action as it should. The only option is to have the starter motor replaced. 3. Starter Remains On After Engine Starts To reiterate, the starter should automatically switch off after the engine starts. That’s because the circuit that was supplying power to the starter motor is supposed to have closed. If the starter stays on after ignition, then it is likely that the solenoid’s contacts have permanently welded together in that closed position. Depending on the seriousness of the issue, you can either disconnect the welded parts or replace the starter motor. This is a serious issue that needs to be addressed quickly so as not to damage the entire starter system and flywheel. |
